SAEO Staff
The SAEO resides in the Women's Center, although it operates autonomously. The SAEO is supervised by the Women's Center Director, Sharon Davie. In the University structure, the Women's Center is one of the smaller centers supervised by the Provost (Associate Provost for Academic Support). The SAEO staff consists of one tull-time coordinator and (this year) two part-time graduate assistants.

Sexual Assault Education Coordinator

Claire N. Kaplan, first came to the University in 1991 as the first Sexual Assault Education Coordinator. Prior to that, she was engaged in feminist anti-violence work, first as a grass-roots activist in Los Angeles, and then as Training/Outreach Director for the LA Commission on Assaults Against Women and Executive Director of the National Coalition Against Sexual Assault, when its headquarters was based in Washington, DC. Claire has eclectic interests, however: she studied animal behavior and environmental design as an undergraduate at UC Davis; received a Masters in Professional Writing (emphasis on the screenplay) at the University of Southern California, and now is working toward her doctorate in Education at the Curry School at UVa. All of her work: as a secretary in a Japanese trade firm, an assistant publicist for a major film company, a freelance writer and graphic artist, and the director of a national non-profit organization (and everything in-between), has served her in good stead in her position at the University. You can reach Claire directly by e-mail at ckaplan@virginia.edu.

SAEO Assistant

Katelyn Sack is the SAEO Assistant. She is a second year UVA student with a particular interest in women's issues. Her responsibilities include providing clerical support to Claire, as well as coordinating our grant writing/application processes. You can reach Katelyn by e-mail at kls9t@virginia.edu.

SAEO Intern

Cristin Lantz is our intern from the Studies in Women and Gender program. She brings a good deal of experience as a volunteer at her home-town sexual assault crisis center and other work on women's issues. Cristin is helping Claire with various projects, in addition to providing staff support to NOW for organizing and planning the Take Back the Night March and Rally. If you have any questions about TBTN, e-mail her at cdl6b@virginia.edu.
