WHO PAYS FOR ALL OF THIS? |
|
The triage or screening nurse will ask you
if you have insurance. Emergency care after a sexual assault isn't free,
although the state may eventually pay for all or part of your treatment.
If you have private insurance, you can decide whether you want that insurance
to pay for your care.
If you have a private insurance policy, it may pay for your medical services, and possibly some psychological counseling. The Commonwealth of Virginia will pay for all medical procedures involved in collecting evidence after an assault, but only if performed at the University of Virginia emergency room. Currently the state will not pay for PERK exams done by Martha Jefferson Hospital. Also, you must agree to make a formal complaint with the police department in order for the Commonwealth to pay for these procedures. If you are a UVa student and have purchased the Student Council-sponsored insurance policy, some of your medical care will be covered by that policy. Most other insurance policies also cover the cost of emergency treatment. After your emergency room visit, it is important for you to seek follow-up care at Student Health. There is no charge for an office visit with a clinician, but there are charges for any laboratory tests that are needed. If you rely on your parents' insurance, you need to know that they will learn about your visit to the emergency room through their insurance company. So, think about whether or not you want them to know about your assault. Discuss your payment options with the VictimWitness Coordinator or with the hospital accounting department. The Virginia Crime Victims Act established the Crime Victims' Compensation Fund to pay for some physical and emotional injuries as a result of a crime. This fund can compensate you for out-of-pocket medical expenses, psychological counseling, or lost wages that are a result of the assault. It is coordinated through the Victim & Witness Assistance Program. The Victim & Witness Program Coordinator can explain the fund to you and help you complete the application.
