The Commonwealth of Virginia has a set of laws that determine how the criminal justice system responds to violent crimes such as rape, sexual assault, and battering. They are far from perfect, and each year, new legislation is introduced (some passed) at the General Assembly session that is intended to improve existing laws.

Not all laws are enforced uniformly, but many advocates are working hard to improve the response to these crimes. Locally, there exists an organization, the Charlottesville/Albemarle County Council on Sexual and Domestic Violence, comprised of professionals in the criminal justice system, representatives from advocacy groups for survivors, and allied professionals, who have made great strides in improving our community's response to survivors.

You can become an advocate for yourself (or your loved ones) by becoming familiar with the laws and your rights.
